Description

Historic walls that protected Istanbul for 1500 years, one of the world's greatest defense systems.

Story

The Istanbul Land Walls are a colossal line of fortifications built in the 5th century during the reign of Theodosius II, considered one of the world's most impressive defense systems. These walls, approximately 6.5 kilometers long, stretch from the Marmara Sea to the Golden Horn and were constructed to protect Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, against attacks from land. The triple defense line system—moat, outer wall, inner wall—was a groundbreaking innovation in military engineering for its time. Over centuries, they successfully withstood attacks from many powerful armies, including the Avars, Arab armies, Bulgarians, Crusader armies, and the Ottomans. One of the most critical points of the walls is the Topkapı–Edirnekapı line, which played a major role in the conquest of Istanbul. In 1453, the city's fate changed thanks to the breach opened by the Ottoman army with large cannons, an event that shaped world history. The walls have many bastions, gates, and tower systems: Belgrade Gate, Silivrikapı, Mevlanakapı, Edirnekapı, and Topkapı are among the best known. Each gate was used for both military and ceremonial purposes. During the Ottoman period, various repairs were made to the walls, but over time, some sections were destroyed, and others were damaged due to urbanization. In the 20th century, the walls were included in UNESCO's World Heritage List, strengthened with major restoration projects, and opened to tourism. Today, visitors can walk on the walls, climb observation towers, and experience the extensive views overlooking both the Marmara Sea and the Golden Horn. The Istanbul Land Walls are not merely a defensive structure; they are also a silent witness to the city's growth, wars, cultural changes, and the rise and fall of two great empires. Each stone holds 1500 years of history.
