Kanlıca
Description
A historic settlement on the Bosphorus coast, known for its famous yogurt and coastal atmosphere.
Story
Kanlıca is one of the most characteristic and peaceful districts of Istanbul's Bosphorus. This settlement, whose history dates back to the Byzantine period, gained fame in the Ottoman period, especially with its coastal mansions, waterfront houses (yalı), statesmen, and coastal culture. Located in one of the calmest bays of the Bosphorus, Kanlıca is one of the rare regions that carries the elegant coastal life of the Ottomans to the present day. The most famous element of Kanlıca is undoubtedly its “Kanlıca Yogurt”. This traditional yogurt, made here since the 19th century, is consumed with powdered sugar sprinkled on it and has become one of Istanbul's gastronomic symbols. Eating yogurt in the seaside tea gardens is one of Kanlıca's classic rituals. The historic buildings in the region, old wooden houses, yalı, and the walking path along the coast add a nostalgic atmosphere to Kanlıca. Mihrabat Grove and the area around Kanlıca Pier are famous for their Bosphorus views. During the Ottoman period, sultans and grand viziers frequently visited the pavilions here, and Kanlıca was preferred especially during the summer months for its cool breeze. In the Republican era, the district maintained its popularity, with writers, painters, and artists describing it as a place of inspiration. Today, Kanlıca still maintains its existence as one of Istanbul's calmest, most peaceful, and most nostalgic corners.
