Kilyos Beaches
Description
It is a natural beach area famous for its wide sandy shores located on the Black Sea coast.
Story
Kilyos Beaches form one of Istanbul's widest and most natural coastal strips opening to the Black Sea. With a history dating back to the Byzantine period, Kilyos has maintained its existence as both a fishing village and a summer resort for many years. During the Ottoman period, the region became one of the coastal settlements preferred by the people of Istanbul for cooling off, especially in the summer months. In the mid-20th century, Kilyos's popularity increased, and summer houses, small guesthouses, and beach facilities were established in the area. The most distinctive feature of Kilyos beaches is their wide, golden sandy structure, shaped by the waves of the Black Sea. This natural and soft texture of the sand offers a unique type of coastline rarely found in Istanbul. Along the Kilyos coast, there are many beaches with different characteristics: natural public beaches, private establishments, camping areas, and more secluded coves. Due to the wavy nature of the Black Sea, the region can sometimes be dangerous; however, this wave action has also made Kilyos a popular spot for surfing and wind sports. In the summer months, it is heavily visited by young people, families, tourists, and athletes. In the early morning hours, the cool air and sound of waves on the shore are ideal for those who want to take a walk. Kilyos's backside is completely surrounded by natural forested areas, which gives the region a rich identity in terms of both sea and nature. Today, Kilyos Beaches are one of Istanbul's most important summer destinations.
