Kumbaba Hill
Description
It is the mystical hill of Şile, known for its red sands and historical beliefs.
Story
Kumbaba Hill is a unique natural formation located near the center of Şile, renowned for its red-colored sands and mystical atmosphere. The sand on the hill takes on an orange-red hue due to its mineral composition, a feature quite rare in Turkey. Ancient sources suggest that the region was used as a kind of healing center. According to legends, people would take sand baths there as the sands on the hill were believed to be beneficial for rheumatism and joint pains. The name 'Kumbaba' for Kumbaba Hill is based on a figure believed to be a dervish or saint who lived in the region. It is said that this person retreated here, provided healing to those around him, and transformed the hill into a sacred area. For this reason, the hill has long been both a natural and spiritual point of visit. Geologically, the hill's sands were formed by wind accumulations along the Black Sea coast and remained on the surface without hardening over time, creating a special formation. Its red color comes from its iron oxide content. Local people say that the sands on the hill constantly shift, are shaped by the wind, and thus have a different appearance each year. During the Republican era, Kumbaba Hill became an important part of Şile's tourism, with sand bath tourism becoming particularly widespread between 1960 and 1980. Today, with restoration and conservation efforts, the hill continues to preserve its natural identity.
