Description
It is a coastal settlement near Kilyos, known for its extensive natural sandy areas and beach.
Story
Kumköy is a coastal settlement located on the Black Sea coast of Sarıyer, named entirely after its natural sand formations. Although close to Kilyos, the region is known for its calmer structure. Kumköy, used by small groups of fishermen throughout history, maintained its existence as one of Istanbul's rural coastal villages until the mid-20th century. The most striking aspect of Kumköy is its wide, fine-grained sand strips. These natural sand formations have been shaped over thousands of years by the powerful wave movements of the Black Sea, wind directions, and natural erosion processes along the coast. Therefore, Kumköy possesses one of the rare dune ecosystems in Istanbul that has remained unspoiled. The coastal area is particularly preferred for swimming, sunbathing, and walking activities during the summer months. Kumköy's coastline is quieter and more natural compared to Kilyos; this makes the region a favorite for those seeking beaches away from crowds. The strong winds of the Black Sea occasionally create powerful waves, which makes the beach attractive to surf enthusiasts. In the inner part of the village, old fishermen's houses, small coffee houses, and rural residential structures are still visible. Although modern constructions have increased in the region in recent years, Kumköy has largely managed to preserve its natural coastal texture. The view, combining the sound of waves and the wide sandy ground at sunset, is quite impressive. Today, Kumköy is one of Sarıyer's most special coastal points, with its natural beach, coastal life, and quiet atmosphere.
