Ömerli Dam
Description
It is the largest drinking water source of Istanbul, a dam lake surrounded by vast forests.
Story
Ömerli Dam is considered one of Istanbul's most important drinking water sources, strategically located in the city's northeast, surrounded by vast forested areas. The dam, commissioned in 1973, was built to meet a significant portion of the growing population of Istanbul's water needs. The area where the dam is located was formerly a natural ecosystem consisting of streams and valleys, with no dense settlement. Therefore, the construction of the dam had an ideal geography for a water catchment basin. With the completion of the dam, settlements in the surrounding area were largely brought under control, and special regulations were implemented to limit entry to the region through basin protection efforts. Thanks to these practices, the Ömerli basin has become one of Istanbul's cleanest and best-preserved natural areas. Today, the dam lake is surrounded by extensive forests, ponds, various bird species, and wildlife. The region serves as a great escape point for nature lovers who want to get away from the city. Although the dam area is officially closed to picnics and swimming, photographers and hiking groups can take controlled tours on certain trails. Ömerli Dam is also a historically significant project in terms of Istanbul's water policies. By creating a water supply chain with other dams in the city, it enables stable water supply even during dry periods. Thanks to its natural silence, vast lake views, and forest texture, the region is one of the rare places in Istanbul that has remained so natural despite being so close to the city.
