Description

It is a magnificent mosque located on the Bosphorus shore, one of the most aesthetic examples of Baroque Ottoman architecture.

Story

Ortaköy Mosque, officially known as Büyük Mecidiye Mosque, is one of the most elegant examples of Ottoman Baroque architecture. It was built in 1854 by Sultan Abdülmecid, and its architects were Garabet Balyan and Nigoğos Balyan from the famous Balyan family. The most important feature that makes the mosque unique is its construction right on the Bosphorus shore; for this reason, the mosque has become one of Istanbul's postcard-worthy symbols, often photographed with the Bosphorus Bridge. The Baroque curves on the mosque's exterior, embossed stone decorations, large windows, and slender minarets add both elegance and grandeur to the structure. Its interior is impressive with its high ceiling, pastel-toned calligraphic decorations, and a colossal crystal chandelier. The light entering through the large windows keeps the mosque bright throughout the day. The plaques written by Abdülmecid himself further enhance the cultural value of the mosque. Having undergone various restorations throughout its history, the mosque saw its largest renovation between 2011 and 2014, during which its structure was strengthened, and decorative details were renewed. Its location right next to Ortaköy Square makes the mosque one of the busiest spots for both worship and tourist visits. When combined with the coastal atmosphere of the square, street artists, kumpir vendors, and tea gardens, the mosque becomes not just a religious building but a cultural symbol of the Beyoğlu–Beşiktaş coastline.
