Riva
Description
It is a coastal region located on the Black Sea coast, known for its natural beaches and calm village atmosphere.
Story
Riva is a coastal settlement famous for its natural beauty, located north of Istanbul, on the Black Sea coast. Known as 'Rheba' during the Byzantine period, the region was an important point both militarily and commercially due to its strategic location opening to the Black Sea. During the Ottoman period, the village continued its life as a small fishing settlement, especially turning into a quiet coastal area preferred by the people of Istanbul as a summer resort in the 19th century. One of Riva's most important features is its natural beaches and wide coastline. These shores, shaped by the waves of the Black Sea, offer an atmosphere completely away from the city crowds, despite being within Istanbul's borders. The natural lagoon and sand dunes formed where Riva Stream flows into the sea have been preferred for walking, fishing, and picnicking for many years. After the second half of the 20th century, Riva became more known for coastal tourism; however, it has still managed to remain more natural and untouched compared to other popular beaches. The village center in the region also has a nostalgic character. Wooden houses, small village cafes, and restaurants along the coast have ensured Riva preserves its local identity. In recent years, Riva has also gained popularity as a filming location for TV series, with natural areas around the historic Riva Castle attracting the interest of production teams.
