Description

It is a historical castle ruin from the Byzantine period, located on the Riva coast by the Black Sea.

Story

Riva Castle is a Byzantine-era defensive structure built at a strategic point on Istanbul's Black Sea coast. Although its first foundations are thought to have been laid in antiquity, most of the current walls belong to the 11th and 12th-century Byzantine construction period. The castle was built to protect the northern line of the Bosphorus against attacks from the Black Sea and was one of the most important border defense points in the region. Due to its dominant position over the sea, the castle is known to have played a critical role in surveillance, signaling, and attack warning systems. Some of the tower ruins are still standing, and the structure is understood to have a square-planned inner courtyard. During the Ottoman period, the defensive function of the castle largely diminished; the structure was mostly used by fishermen and coastal villagers as a storage and shelter area. The most striking aspect of Riva Castle is that it brings together both history and nature at the same point. From the castle, the giant waves of the Black Sea, Riva beach, river mouths, and a wide coastline can be seen panoramically. This view has earned the praise of travelers visiting the region for centuries. Today, the castle is largely in ruins but has begun to be restored and preserved. It is a very attractive stop, especially for photographers, history enthusiasts, and nature walkers. The calm atmosphere of the region, combined with the castle's windy hilltop location and expansive views, offers an impressive experience.
