Description
It is a historical lighthouse dating back to the 19th century, illuminating the entrance to the Black Sea.
Story
Rumeli Lighthouse is a historical lighthouse located at the northernmost point where the Istanbul Strait opens to the Black Sea, on a critical line of sea traffic. The settlement that gave its name to the lighthouse has sustained its life as a fishing village for centuries and has played a strategic role in the maritime history of the region. The history of the lighthouse dates back to watchtowers from the Byzantine period, but the current structure was built in 1856 by the Ottoman Empire with French engineering. Constructed to ensure the safety of allied navies coming from the Black Sea during the Crimean War, the lighthouse is also one of the significant examples of the Ottoman modernization period's maritime investments. With a height of nearly 30 meters and a sharp white light, the lighthouse guides one of the Black Sea's most challenging routes. It has managed to stand firm against numerous storms, fog, and strong winds over the years, becoming a symbol of the region. Its location on a cliff makes the lighthouse unique both aesthetically and strategically. During the Ottoman period, 'lighthouse keeper families' who maintained the lighthouse lived here for generations, leaving their mark on the region's culture. The area where the lighthouse is located has also been used as a military observation point throughout history. The structure, which underwent modernization during the Republic era, still functions today as an active navigation light. The surrounding sea view, rocky shores, and cliffs make the region one of Istanbul's most dramatic natural landscapes. Rumeli Lighthouse is a unique Sarıyer heritage offering history, nature, and maritime culture together.
