Description

It is one of the most elegant works of Mimar Sinan, showcasing the pinnacle of Ottoman tile art.

Story

Rüstem Pasha Mosque was built by Mimar Sinan in 1561, commissioned by Rüstem Pasha, the son-in-law of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and one of the most powerful statesmen of his era. Located amidst the narrow streets of Eminönü, this mosque, despite its rather plain exterior, dazzles with the extraordinary richness of its Iznik tiles inside. Colors, patterns, and motifs from the brightest period of 16th-century Iznik tile-making cover the interior walls of the mosque from top to bottom. Among these tiles, tulip, carnation, cintemani, and rumi motifs are the most striking. As the mosque is situated in the middle of commercial centers, its lower sections were designed as shops, and the income generated from them was transferred to the mosque's expenses. In this respect, the structure is not only a place of worship but also an economic system within the Ottoman waqf (endowment) order. Due to the narrowness of the area, Mimar Sinan placed the mosque on an elevated platform, thereby providing spaciousness to the interior and establishing an aesthetic connection with its surroundings. Rüstem Pasha Mosque has survived many fires and earthquakes over the years, and most of its tiles have managed to reach the present day. Especially the coral red tiles are among the most demanding productions of Iznik workshops, and their value is priceless even today. Despite the dim light of the mosque, the sparkle of the tiles adds a mystical atmosphere to the structure, making visitors feel as if they are traveling within colors. Despite the crowds of Eminönü, the tranquility inside makes the mosque one of Istanbul's most special places of worship.
