Story

Şemsi Pasha Mosque is one of Mimar Sinan's small-scale but most poetic works. Built in 1580 for Şemsi Ahmed Pasha, the mosque is famous for its location closest to the sea on the Üsküdar coast. Some sources state that the mosque's plan was designed in a way that 'would not disturb the breeze,' which is why seagulls rarely land at this spot. For this reason, the mosque is known among the public as 'Kuşkonmaz Mosque' (Seagull-Free Mosque). The mosque has a rectangular plan and is a simple and elegant structure. This small mosque, built during Sinan's master period, is one of the rare examples where architectural simplicity and spatial tranquility converge. Its courtyard opens towards the sea, and small madrasah and tomb structures standing on a platform are part of the mosque complex. This small külliye reflects Ottoman coastal architecture in its purest form. The location of Şemsi Pasha Mosque has been an important stop for both the people of Üsküdar and travelers throughout history. Evliya Çelebi praises the mosque's peaceful atmosphere. During the Ottoman period, it was known as one of the first stops for those arriving by sea.
