Description

One of Istanbul's oldest water cisterns, the structure is famous for its modern light and sound shows.

Story

Şerefiye Cistern, with its 1600-year historical past, is known as one of Istanbul's oldest underground water structures. Built at the end of the 4th century and beginning of the 5th century, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II, this cistern is one of the most important examples of Roman and Byzantine water storage systems within the city. Over many years, it has been used for various purposes, sometimes completely forgotten, and sometimes rendered inaccessible due to structures built above it. Brought to light with modern restorations, the cistern boasts a very elegant architectural structure. Its ceiling, resting on 32 marble columns, is supported by regular arches, and the intricate craftsmanship of the columns has lent both simplicity and aesthetics to the structure. Today, one of the unique features that makes Şerefiye Cistern special is the three-dimensional light and sound shows held here. Thanks to these shows, visitors have the opportunity to experience both the history of the structure and Istanbul's past in an impressive atmosphere. The cool and echoing environment of the cistern adds a dramatic flair to the shows, while also showcasing the engineering genius of the Roman era. Although not as popular as the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı), Şerefiye Cistern is seen by many visitors as a calmer and more mystical alternative. By combining historical layers with modern exhibition techniques, it conveys both information and emotion to visitors. In this respect, it has become one of Istanbul's most special underground venues.
