Story

Şile Castle is an important defensive structure known to have been built during the Byzantine period, situated on a rocky promontory on the Black Sea coast. Its history dates back to the 12th century. The castle served as a lookout and defense point against attack threats coming from the Black Sea. After the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul, the structure was reinforced and continued to be used for coastal security. The castle is in the form of a small watchtower with a nearly square plan. The battlements on its upper part and the stone masonry walls offer important details about the military architecture of the period. Şile Castle's location had great strategic value as it was suitable for controlling both the coast and routes coming from the sea. Its proximity to Şile pier provided an advantage for observing ship movements. Over time, earthquakes, wind erosion, and the harsh waves of the Black Sea caused a large part of the castle to deteriorate. In the 2010s, it was restored and made more visible. Walking paths, observation decks, and information panels were arranged around the castle, allowing visitors to get to know the historical structure more closely. Today, Şile Castle is one of the most visited spots due to its views, historical importance, and its identity as an inseparable symbol of the Şile coast.
