Story
Şile Center is one of the oldest coastal settlements located on the Black Sea coast in the north of Istanbul. Its history dates back to ancient times, including the Bithynian and Roman periods. Due to its geographical location, it has a long history as a natural, military, and commercial center. During the Byzantine era, Şile was used as an important coastal outpost for maritime activities, and during the Ottoman period, it developed in terms of fishing, transportation, coastal security, and trade. Especially in the 18th and 19th centuries, Şile's pier area became a small port center from which grain, wood, and salt were transported to Istanbul. One of Şile's most important cultural values is 'Şile Cloth'. This hand-woven fabric, which gained fame in the 19th century, became one of the region's most important economic activities. Şile Cloth, still woven on traditional looms, is known for its natural, light structure in summer clothes. Its geographical structure is another important element that defines Şile's character. The waves of the Black Sea, wide beaches, caves, rocky coasts, and forested areas make the region one of Istanbul's most natural escape points. In the center, old wooden houses, small bazaar streets, fishing boats, and a promenade stretching along the coast create a nostalgic atmosphere. Şile continued to develop during the Republican era; with easier transportation, it became a favorite region for summer residents and weekend vacationers. Today, it continues its existence as a center that carries traces of local life and attracts attention with its natural beauty.
