Description

It is a historic lighthouse built in 1859, possessing one of the Black Sea's most powerful lights.

Story

Şile Lighthouse was built in 1859 by French engineers during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid and is one of the oldest and most powerful lighthouses on the Black Sea coast. Situated on a 60-meter-high cliff, the lighthouse has a light elevation exceeding 90 meters from sea level. This allowed it to perform a critical task of guiding ships through the rough waves and foggy weather of the Black Sea. The lighthouse's cylindrical stone structure boasts a design that blends classical European lighthouse architecture with Ottoman character. Its walls are built with stone blocks thicker than 1 meter. The lighting system initially operated with gas lamps but was later converted to an electric system. With its powerful light extending up to 20 nautical miles, it played a vital role in the safety of ships sailing in the Black Sea for many years. Throughout its history, the lighthouse was actively used during both the Ottoman and Republican eras. The living quarters for lighthouse keepers, storage areas, and a small garden complex are located at the base of the lighthouse. It has undergone numerous restorations over time, with the most comprehensive renovation taking place in the 2010s. Today, Şile Lighthouse attracts visitors as both a historical and architectural symbol. The view of the Black Sea from the cliffs, the sound of the waves, and the impressive stance of the lighthouse combine to create a very powerful atmosphere.
