Description

It is one of the significant mosques of classical Ottoman architecture, commissioned by Kapudan Pasha Sinan Pasha.

Story

Sinan Pasha Mosque was built in the 1550s by Kapudan Pasha Sinan Pasha, the famous naval commander of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's era. Considered among the works of Mimar Sinan, the mosque bears the simple yet powerful lines of classical Ottoman architecture. Located between Barbaros Boulevard, the center of Beşiktaş, and the coastline, the mosque has served for centuries as an important place of worship and gathering for sailors, soldiers preparing for expeditions, and the local community. The mosque's most striking features include its spacious and airy interior. The main dome rests on four elephant feet, supported by two semi-domes on each side. The ablution fountain in its courtyard reflects the elegant marble craftsmanship of the classical period. Simple geometric lines were preferred in the mihrab and minbar decorations of the mosque; this simplicity is a characteristic feature of Mimar Sinan's early works. Although Sinan Pasha's madrasa was known to be right next to the mosque, very few traces of that structure remain today. Even though the Beşiktaş district has undergone significant transformations over time, Sinan Pasha Mosque stands like a historical refuge amidst the bustling city flow. The sounds of seagulls spreading to the shore after morning prayers complete the mosque's atmosphere. During the Ottoman period, naval soldiers embarking on campaigns would gather here, and prayers would be offered. In the Republican era, the mosque continued to be an important center for both worship and social aid activities. Today, Sinan Pasha Mosque continues its existence as both an architectural and spiritual stop in the heart of Beşiktaş.
