Description

Sultanahmet Mosque, one of Istanbul's most famous mosques, is one of the most magnificent Ottoman works with its six minarets and tiles.

Story

Built by Sultan Ahmed I between 1609 and 1616, the Sultanahmet Mosque is one of the most exquisite and magnificent works of Ottoman architecture. Its architect, Sedefkâr Mehmed Ağa, being a student of Mimar Sinan, created a unique aesthetic in the mosque that reflects both classical Ottoman lines and his own interpretation. The mosque, which caused a great stir in its time with its six minarets, stands apart from other mosques both symbolically and architecturally due to this feature. Over 21,000 İznik tiles in the interior create an impressive atmosphere, leading the mosque to be known as the “Blue Mosque”. The dome arrangement, natural light filtering through the windows, and calligraphic decorations offer visitors a peaceful unity. The complex of Sultanahmet Mosque includes a madrasah, a sultan's pavilion, an ablution courtyard, and various social structures. Despite being built during a period of stagnation for the Ottoman Empire, the mosque reflects immense grandeur and engineering success. The structure, which has undergone many earthquakes and restorations over the years, is most notable for its ability to host both worship and tourist visits simultaneously. It is one of Istanbul's most visited spots not only for its architectural beauty but also because it is intertwined with many historical structures such as Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, and Topkapi Palace. Today, visited by millions from around the world, the mosque continues to be among Istanbul's iconic landmarks with its spiritual atmosphere that has persisted for centuries.
