Description

It is the central point of Istanbul's modern political, social, and cultural life.

Story

Taksim Square is one of Istanbul's most important open spaces, representing both its modern identity and social memory. Its history dates back to the 18th century; during the Ottoman period, it was named “Taksim” (meaning the distribution point of water) because the water distribution depots for the Galata-Beyoğlu line were located here. In the 19th century, with Westernization movements, the square gained military and administrative functions; the Taksim Artillery Barracks were built during this period. At the beginning of the 20th century, it began to transform into the center of Istanbul's post-Republican urbanization. With the opening of the Republic Monument in 1928, the square became one of the symbols of the modernization of the Republic of Turkey. The monument, created by General Pietro Canonica, reflects both the War of Independence and Turkey's new governance philosophy. Today, it remains an important center for national holidays, official ceremonies, and social gatherings. Taksim Square has undergone significant transformations over the years. After the demolition of the Artillery Barracks, the area became a large square. From the 1960s onwards, the square became the center of modern Istanbul's cultural, artistic, and social dynamism. Due to metro lines, cultural centers, hotels, restaurants, and being the entry point to İstiklal Avenue, it has become a place through which hundreds of thousands of people pass every day. Gezi Park, as the most important green area of the square, holds high value both historically and socially. Today, Taksim Square remains a familiar meeting point for both tourists and Istanbul residents. With its open structure, walking paths, and surrounding cultural centers, it continues to be the heart of modern Istanbul.
