Yoros Castle
Description
It is a historical castle ruin dating back to the Byzantine period, controlling the point where the Bosphorus opens to the Black Sea.
Story
Yoros Castle is one of the most important defensive castles of the Byzantine period, built at the most strategic point where the Istanbul Bosphorus opens to the Black Sea. Although its first foundations are estimated to have been laid in the Ancient Age, the majority of today's walls were built during the Byzantine period in the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle was used both to control the Bosphorus entrance and to create a barrier against attacks coming from the Black Sea. Due to its location, it has changed hands between Genoese, Byzantines, and Ottomans throughout history. The castle consists of two large bastions, curtain walls, and the remains of an inner courtyard. It is known that the Genoese made some additions to the structure when they captured the castle; the arched wall traces on the western facade of the castle point to this period. The Ottomans took full control of the castle after 1453 and continued to use it for Bosphorus security, especially during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmed. The most striking feature of Yoros Castle is its extraordinary view. From the castle, the waves of the Black Sea, the blue waters of the Bosphorus, the shores of Anadolu Kavağı, and the forested area on the opposite slope can be seen at a single glance. Many travelers throughout history have praised this castle; some even describe it as 'the crown of the gate opening to the Black Sea'. Today, although the castle ruins await restoration, they host numerous visitors due to their view and historical atmosphere. With its windy structure and breathtaking panorama, it is one of Istanbul's most impressive vantage points.
