Agora Open Air Museum
Description
The agora containing Roman-era ruins, used as the marketplace and social center of ancient Smyrna (Izmir).
Story
Izmir Agora is an area located in the center of Konak district, amidst modern urbanization, forming the heart of ancient Smyrna's public and commercial life during the Roman Empire period. 'Agora' in ancient Greek cities refers to a central square that served functions such as a marketplace, meeting place, and court area. The agora in Izmir was used as the commercial center of the city of Smyrna, founded during Alexander the Great's period in the 4th century BC, but it was completely destroyed in a major earthquake in 178 AD. The structure whose ruins are seen today was rebuilt with the support of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Among the ruins of the Agora, the three-story basilica, the western stoa (portico), and monumental gates with statues stand out. Especially the mosaics and sculptures on the floor of the porticoes demonstrate the artistic richness and commercial vibrancy of the period. The Agora was not only an area for trade but also a center for philosophical discussions and political decisions, as well as the social and intellectual life of the city. During the excavations, traces of Roman-era water channels, arches, and gladiatorial fights were also found. These remains prove how high the city's level of prosperity was. The fact that the Agora is located right in the middle of today's modern settlement strikingly reveals Izmir's historical layering. This archaeological site, integrated with the historical fabric of Altındağ, is a living museum offering visitors tangible evidence of daily life in the Roman Empire and Izmir's international importance in ancient times. Restoration and excavation work is still ongoing, and the area is constantly enriched with new findings.
