Alaçatı Bazaar and Windmills
Description
A tourist town famous for its authentic stone houses, narrow streets, and famous windmills, preserving Aegean Greek architecture.
Story
Alaçatı is a historic town located on the Çeşme Peninsula, which has become one of Turkey's most popular tourist destinations in recent years. Although its establishment dates back to the 17th century, its unique architectural fabric was shaped by the Greek population living here in the 19th century. The most characteristic feature of the town are the Alaçatı stone houses, which are resistant to the strong winds of the Aegean, typically two-storied, with stone lower floors, bay-windowed upper floors, and colorful shuttered windows. The Turkish population that settled here after the Turkey-Greece Population Exchange largely preserved this architectural heritage. Alaçatı Bazaar consists of narrow, stone-paved streets; boutique hotels, chic restaurants, art galleries, and souvenir shops lining these streets add a unique atmosphere to the town. Another symbol of Alaçatı is the restored windmills located on a hill. These windmills are historical structures that demonstrate the importance of wind energy for the region and give the town a traditional silhouette. From the area where the windmills are located, the entire town and the surrounding windsurfing coves can be panoramically viewed. Alaçatı is famous not only for its architecture but also for being one of the world's most suitable centers for windsurfing; the continuous and strong winds in the region create ideal conditions for surfers. Especially during the summer months, the town has become one of the cultural and entertainment centers of the Aegean with its herb festival, gastronomic events, and nightlife. Alaçatı is one of the most important towns combining historical, architectural, and modern tourism potential on İzmir's coastline.
