Description

An ancient city near Bergama, linked to the cult of Asclepius, used as an important health and thermal treatment center during the Roman period.

Story

The ancient city of Allianoi, located within the borders of İzmir's Bergama district, became a significant topic on Turkey's agenda due to the risk of being submerged under the waters of the Yortanlı Dam and the subsequent debates. It is a unique thermal health center. Although the city's history dates back to the Hellenistic period, its most brilliant era was during the Roman Empire (2nd century AD). Allianoi was connected to the cult of **Asclepius**, the greatest god of healing in the ancient world, and served as a supporting thermal treatment center for the Asclepion in ancient Pergamon. The city's name is derived from the Latin word *allium*, meaning 'thermal springs'. Allianoi is characterized by its baths, pools, healing centers, bridges, and roads, all utilizing thermal waters. The quality of the thermal pools, mosaics, and water installations unearthed during excavations demonstrates how important a health tourism center the city was at that time. Its mosaics and Roman sculptures, in particular, reflect the artistic richness of the period. The city has been exceptionally well-preserved to this day, largely due to being buried under mud, making it one of the best-preserved thermal cities in Anatolia. However, the story of Allianoi stands out not only for its archaeological significance but also for its environmental and cultural struggles. Despite long-standing legal and social battles, the city, which was planned to be submerged due to the construction of the Yortanlı Dam, was unfortunately partially yielded to water. Although a large part of Allianoi is now underwater, this does not change the historical importance of the city and the thermal culture surrounding it. Allianoi is a controversial yet priceless heritage that demonstrates İzmir's significance not only as a military and commercial hub but also as a center for health and healing.
