Story

Aya Fotini (Saint Photini) Church is an important Greek Orthodox church ruin located in the center of Bornova district of İzmir, surrounded by Levantine Mansions and other historical structures, representing the multi-religious and multicultural past of the region. The church's history dates back to the late 18th or early 19th century and was built to meet the religious needs of the dense Greek and Levantine community in Bornova. The church, especially in terms of its architectural style and interior decorations, reflects the elegance of Orthodox architecture in the Aegean of that period. Built within a large courtyard, the structure features a basilica plan and remarkable stonework. Aya Fotini lost its function after the departure of the Greek and Levantine population from Bornova (after the Great Fire of 1922 and the Population Exchange). Although a large part of the church suffered destruction during its historical process, its ruins, and especially its foundational structures, are important for demonstrating the religious and cultural richness of the region. Today, the church is presented to visitors as an open-air museum or a protected historical site. Together with the surrounding Levantine mansions and the remains of Catholic and Anglican churches, it embodies Bornova's cosmopolitan structure, where different faiths and cultures once coexisted peacefully. This church is an important heritage demonstrating that İzmir's history is enriched not only by mosques and synagogues but also by structures belonging to different denominations of Christianity. Aya Fotini maintains its place in the center of Bornova as a silent but powerful witness to cultural tolerance and the city's multinational trade past. Restoration efforts are underway to pass on the historical identity of the structure to future generations.
