Story

Basmane Hotels Street is a vital area in terms of Izmir's trade and transportation history. Located in Konak, right at the exit of Basmane Train Station, this street and its surroundings became the most important transportation and accommodation center of the city with the construction of Izmir-Aydın and Izmir-Kasaba railways in the mid-19th century. This area was the first stop for passengers, merchants, and travelers arriving in Izmir by train. The street hosted numerous historic hotel buildings displaying the architectural features of the period. These hotels (such as Otel De La Rose, Büyük Otel) stood out with their facades blending both European and traditional Ottoman architectural styles, and their spacious halls. While Basmane Train Station itself was a symbol of Izmir's modernization process and its connection to international trade networks, the Hotels Street formed the social and economic heart of this trade. This area was also at the center of commercial traffic due to its proximity to Kemeraltı Bazaar and Havra Street. Today, although some parts of the street have been restored and some are worn out, it still preserves its historical texture. It is possible to see the traces of Izmir's multicultural and vibrant trade life of that period on the facades, old signs, and architectural details of these hotel and inn buildings. Basmane Hotels Street is a cultural heritage site that embodies Izmir's modernization period, which began with the railway, in terms of accommodation and commercial activity, and should not be forgotten.
