Museum

Description

One of the best preserved examples of Classical Ottoman civil architecture and wood craftsmanship, dating back to the 18th century, located in the Birgi town of Ödemiş.

Story

Çakırağa Mansion is located in the Birgi neighborhood of Ödemiş district, İzmir, which has largely preserved its historical texture. Birgi is an ancient settlement that served as the capital of the Aydınoğulları Principality, and the mansion reflects the rich agricultural and commercial life of this region in its architecture. The mansion was built in the late 18th century by an aghas known as **Çakırağa**, one of the wealthiest people in the region. The structure is considered one of the most exquisite examples of **Classical Ottoman civil architecture** of its period, especially in wood and pen work art. The mansion is a three-story building constructed with a wooden frame on stone foundations, featuring an 'inner sofa' plan in line with traditional Turkish house typology. Its most striking features are the wooden bay windows on the exterior facade and the lattice work on the windows. The interior decorations, however, transform the mansion into an art gallery. The ceilings, walls, and cupboard doors of the rooms are adorned with floral motifs, geometric patterns, and landscape paintings (using the pen work technique). The paintings, especially in the upper floor rooms, offer rich insights into the daily life and aesthetic understanding of the period. The separation of rooms into winter and summer sections, designed according to different climatic conditions, also demonstrates the mansion's functional intelligence. Today, Çakırağa Mansion is open to visitors as a restored museum-house, offering an opportunity to experience firsthand the lifestyle of a wealthy Ottoman family and the quality of art and craftsmanship during the Ottoman period. Birgi, not only with this mansion but also with **Aydınoğlu Mehmet Bey Mosque** and its historical tombs, is an important cultural destination in the inner regions, showcasing İzmir's cultural and historical depth. The mansion stands as a monumental representative of civil architecture in the Aegean.
