Description

A center that hosts one of Turkey's richest natural history collections, showcasing the geological, paleontological, and biological heritage of the Aegean region.

Story

Ege University Natural History Application and Research Center is an important institution that demonstrates how rich İzmir's natural and scientific heritage is, not just its historical and cultural one. Established in 1968, the center hosts one of Turkey's largest and most valuable natural history collections. The collection focuses on the geological, paleontological (fossils), mineralogical, and biological (botanical and zoological) diversity of the Aegean Region. In the center's exhibition halls, millions of years old fossil remains, rare minerals, examples of endemic plant and animal species of Anatolia and the Aegean, and especially skeletons and models of giant extinct animals that lived in Anatolia are displayed. The center was established primarily for education and research, offering important information in natural sciences to students, researchers, and the general public. The fossil collection is a unique resource for understanding the geological changes and prehistoric life of the Aegean Region. Unlike the previously listed History and Art Museum or Archeology Museum, this center focuses on İzmir's heritage formed by natural processes rather than human hands. It is a scientifically key stop that shows how valuable İzmir's natural geography and biological richness are.
