Ephesus Museum
Description
One of the most important local museums in the world, famous for its artifacts excavated from the ancient city of Ephesus, especially the statues of Artemis and Roman-era findings.
Story
The Ephesus Museum is located in the district center of Selçuk and was established to preserve and exhibit artifacts excavated from the ancient city of Ephesus. Situated only a few hundred meters from the ancient city, the museum houses thousands of artifacts obtained from excavations, and these artifacts are among the most important sources for understanding the history, daily life, and religious beliefs of Ephesus. Due to the richness of its exhibited works and the importance of Ephesus in world history, the museum is considered 'one of the most important local museums in the world.' The focal point of the museum's collection is the two large and iconic symbols of Ephesus: the statues of **Great Artemis** and **Small Artemis**. These statues are visual representations of the unique main goddess cult of Ephesus and stand out with their rich ornamentation. Additionally, the museum displays exquisite Roman-era bronze sculptures (especially 'Running Man' and 'Wounded Amazon'), architectural fragments, and glass and gold artifacts depicting daily life in Ephesus, all excavated from the terrace houses and Slope Houses in Ephesus. The museum provides a firsthand look at the art and craftsmanship of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The Ephesus Museum is a must-see for anyone visiting the Ancient City because it gathers critical artifacts that cannot be seen in the city's ruins but reveal its richness and splendor. The museum's garden is also filled with inscriptions and sarcophagi. This museum represents the intellectual and artistic heart of the world heritage in the Selçuk district of İzmir, proving that the glory of Ephesus is not merely limited to stone walls.
