One of the 12 Ionian cities on the Çeşme Peninsula. An ancient settlement famous for its Athena Temple and theatre, meaning 'Red City'.

Story

Erythrai Ancient City is a historical settlement located north of the Çeşme Peninsula, near the current Ildırı Village, and is one of the most important 12 cities of ancient Ionia. The city's name is derived from the Greek word Erythros, meaning 'Red'; this name is thought to come either from the color of the soil in the region or from the red wine produced here in ancient times. Erythrai held a strategic position in maritime trade and became one of the key points in the Ionian colonization and trade network, especially developing in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The city is also featured in legends as the dwelling place of the famous oracle Sibylla. Among the most striking structures among the city's ruins are the Hellenistic Theater built on the hillside, the Temple dedicated to Athena, the city's protective goddess, and the city walls. The theater, in its restored state today, offers an impressive ambiance overlooking the sea. The foundations and altars of the Athena Temple located on the Acropolis provide important clues about the city's religious life. Erythrai continued its existence during the Roman period, but its importance gradually diminished during the Byzantine period and it began to be abandoned due to pirate attacks. A large portion of the artifacts unearthed from the ancient city are exhibited today in the Archaeology Museum inside Çeşme Castle. Erythrai's current location, intertwined with Ildırı Village, offers visitors the opportunity to experience the remains of the ancient period within modern Aegean village life. The city's establishment and geography show that İzmir's power in Aegean trade was not limited to Ephesus and Smyrna, but that the entire peninsula was equipped with strategic ports. Erythrai is a unique cultural heritage representing the historical depth of Çeşme beyond its beach tourism.
