Description

An ancient city located on the northern Ionian coast of Anatolia, known for its famous seafarers and colonies, situated directly beneath the present-day Foça settlement.

Story

Foça (known as Phokaia in ancient Greek) is an ancient settlement located north of İzmir and one of the most important cities of the 12 Ionian city-states. Foça gained fame especially for its **maritime prowess** and extensive colonization movements around the Mediterranean. Historically, the people of Foça established important settlements such as Marseille (Massalia), Elea (Velia), and Alalia, making significant contributions to Mediterranean trade and culture. The city's name comes from the figure of the Seal (Mediterranean Seal) featured on its coins minted from the 7th century BC onwards. A large part of today's Foça district center is built upon the remains of the ancient city. Therefore, a significant portion of the ancient heritage lies beneath modern structures, but important remains can still be seen along the coastline and in the sea. Among the most notable structures are the city's famous **Heron** (heroic monument), Hellenistic-period **theater** ruins, temple foundations, and traces of ancient **harbor breakwaters**. Foça's walls are known as one of the strongest defense systems of its time. The story of Foça became legendary with the courage of its people who, during the Persian siege in 546 BC, abandoned the city to seek new homes by sea. The ruins of the ancient city integrate with the natural beauty and historic harbor texture of modern Foça. Foça is a must-see coastal and historical stop representing not only Ephesus in the south of İzmir but also the Ionian heritage in the north.
