Description

Located in the heart of Kemeraltı Bazaar, it is Izmir's largest and oldest mosque. An elegant example of classical Ottoman architecture.

Story

Hisar Mosque takes its name from the fortifications (from 'hisar' meaning castle) surrounding it and is located in the Konak district of Izmir, right in the center of Kemeraltı Bazaar. Its construction began in 1597 by Aydınoğlu Yakup Bey and was completed after a long process. It is one of the largest and most architecturally magnificent religious structures remaining from the Ottoman period in Izmir. The mosque bears the characteristics of Classical Ottoman architecture; it stands out with its octagonal main dome, surrounding small domes, and two minarets with single balconies. Its dome is supported by 16 arches and is surrounded by large windows that illuminate the central space. The interior showcases the subtleties of Ottoman art with rich tile decorations, intricate **kalemişi** (hand-drawn/painted ornamental work) adornments, and wood carvings. Especially its mihrab (prayer niche) is dazzling with its stone craftsmanship and gold-gilded decorations. Hisar Mosque became the spiritual center of the city's economic and social life in the 17th and 18th centuries, when Izmir grew and developed with port trade. The mosque has served as a continuous gathering and worship place for Kemeraltı artisans for centuries. In Izmir's multinational and multi-religious trade environment, it has been an important part of the city's religious identity as the largest place of worship for the Muslim community. It has been restored many times after disasters such as fires and earthquakes throughout history, but has largely preserved its original architectural features. Hisar Mosque is an island of tranquility amidst the bustling crowd of Kemeraltı and one of the strongest representatives of Izmir's deep-rooted Ottoman-Turkish heritage.
