Historic Elevator
Description
One of İzmir's symbolic and historical structures, built in the Karataş district to overcome the 58-meter elevation difference between two streets.
Story
The Historic Elevator was built in 1907 by the Jewish businessman **Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu** in İzmir's Karataş district to overcome the significant elevation difference (approximately 58 meters) between Mithatpaşa Street and Şehit Nihatbey Street (Dario Moreno Street). At that time, climbing the steep stairs was difficult, so this practical solution was found to facilitate transportation, especially for the elderly and children. The structure initially had two water-powered elevators, but these were later replaced with modern electric systems. The street where the elevator is located is one of the most beautiful examples of İzmir's multicultural structure; Jewish, Greek, and Turkish families lived together in the area. The construction of the elevator revitalized social life in the region and strengthened communication between the two neighborhoods. The terrace and restaurant located at the top of the tower have gradually become a popular social venue offering one of the best views of the Gulf of İzmir and the western part of the city. The terrace provides an opportunity to observe the city's traditional texture from a modern perspective. The Historic Elevator is valuable not only from an engineering and architectural standpoint but also as a legacy of İzmir's Levantine and multicultural commercial life. Restored by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality in the 1990s and opened to tourism, the Elevator is now one of İzmir's most romantic and most visited landmarks. The short and charming **Dario Moreno Street** beneath it is named after the famous İzmir artist Dario Moreno, who once lived there. The Elevator offers a vertical journey into İzmir's past.
