Description

An artificial urban forest and recreation area spread over a large area on the coast of İzmir Bay, used by the city residents for relaxation and sports.

Story

Inciraltı Urban Forest is one of İzmir's largest and newest green area projects, located on the southern coast of İzmir Bay, bordering the districts of Balçova and Narlıdere. It takes its name from the fig trees that were extensively cultivated in the region in the past. While the area was a region of swamps, reeds, and agricultural lands in the 19th and 20th centuries, it was planned with the goal of creating a 'green lung' against İzmir's increasingly concrete structure as modern urbanization accelerated. The Urban Forest has been transformed into a large public park with the planting of tens of thousands of saplings and environmental arrangements. This vast area offers the people of İzmir and visitors the opportunity to spend time intertwined with nature, accompanied by sea views. It includes long walking and jogging trails, bicycle paths, picnic and relaxation areas, children's playgrounds, and sports facilities. Thanks to its zero-distance location to the bay, Inciraltı is a popular escape point, especially on weekends, for İzmir residents who want to breathe fresh sea air. The Urban Forest represents İzmir's environmentally conscious and sustainability-focused approaches in modern urban planning. Additionally, nearby are institutions such as the **Inciraltı Naval Museum** (the former TCG Ege Ship) which showcases İzmir's maritime heritage, and İzmir University of Economics. This area is an example of successfully integrating İzmir's natural beauty with modern urban life.
