Story

Kızlarağası Han, located in the heart of İzmir's historic Kemeraltı Bazaar, is a monumental structure that played a key role in trade history. The han was built in 1744 by Hacı Beşir Ağa; Beşir Ağa was a powerful figure in the Ottoman Empire holding the title of 'Kızlarağası' (Chief Black Eunuch of the Imperial Harem), from whom the han takes its name. Hans were multifunctional structures in Ottoman cities where caravans and merchants stayed, stored their goods, and conducted trade. Kızlarağası Han is one of the best-preserved examples of classical Ottoman Han architecture in the Aegean region. The building, which has a rectangular plan, features a large courtyard surrounded by two-story arcades. While the ground floors were typically used as warehouses and stables, the rooms on the upper floors were reserved for the accommodation of merchants. The han was a center for the trade of goods such as spices, silk, cotton, and precious stones, which arrived at İzmir port and were distributed from there. Today, in its restored form, the han has become one of Kemeraltı's most vibrant commercial and social areas. Its courtyard hosts traditional Turkish coffee houses, carpet and rug sellers, handicraft shops, and souvenir stores. The atmosphere of the han allows visitors to feel the vibrancy of the intense caravan and port trade of the 18th century. Kızlarağası Han is a priceless historical and architectural heritage, showing that İzmir was not only a port city but also the largest junction of trade routes between the Mediterranean and Anatolia.
