Description

Historic castle ruins and a viewpoint located on a hill overlooking the city, founded by the generals of Alexander the Great.

Story

Kadifekale was built on the hill of the same name, overlooking İzmir Bay and the entire city. The history of the castle dates back to the 4th century BC, to the period of Lysimachus, one of Alexander the Great's generals who ruled Anatolia after his death. It was designed as a strategic defensive point during the rebuilding of ancient Smyrna (İzmir). The castle has been continuously inhabited and used for defensive purposes since the Hellenistic period. It underwent repairs during the Roman and Byzantine periods, with its walls being particularly strengthened. During the Byzantine era, the castle played a key role as both a military base and for the protection of civilian settlements. The castle, which later came under Seljuk and then Ottoman rule, maintained its strategic importance during these periods as well, used to monitor ships entering the port and ensure the internal security of the city. Among the castle ruins, cisterns, bastions, and a large part of the city walls can be seen. One of Kadifekale's most important features is the panoramic view it offers. From the summit, the silhouette of modern İzmir stretching from Alsancak to Karşıyaka, the historic Kemeraltı and Konak Square, İzmir Bay, and the opposite shores of the sea can be clearly observed. This view offers a unique visual experience combining the geography of ancient Smyrna and today's metropolis. Although the castle has suffered damage over many years due to surrounding settlements, recent restoration efforts are attempting to revive its historical identity. Kadifekale is the most critical point to visit to understand why İzmir has been such a strategic port city since ancient times. It functioned as the acropolis (upper castle) of the ancient city and has been a silent witness to the historical continuity of the city.
