Karabel Rock Monument (Hittite Rock Monument)
Description
An important archaeological monument near Kemalpaşa, carved into the rock, dating to the Late Hittite period, depicting a military figure.
Story
The Karabel Rock Monument, located on an ancient pass at the foot of Mount Nif in Kemalpaşa district of İzmir, is one of the rarest and easternmost Hittite traces in Western Anatolia. The monument is dated to the 13th century BC, the last period of the Hittite Empire in Anatolia, proving that the region was connected not only with Ionian civilizations but also with great empires from within Anatolia. The monument consists of a single figure carved in relief on a steep rock face. The figure, dressed in military attire, holding a spear and a bow, is likely a depiction of a leader or a Hittite governor of the region. Next to the figure, there are Luwian hieroglyphic inscriptions (one of the Indo-European languages spoken in Anatolia) belonging to the period. These inscriptions state which king or principality the monument belongs to and explain its purpose. The monument served as a boundary stone or a victory monument marking the western borders and sphere of influence of the Hittite Empire. Despite Karabel being relatively far from the center of İzmir, its archaeological importance is immense in shedding light on the deep Hittite and Anatolian history of the region. This monument shows that the geography of İzmir was a focal point not only for Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations but also for great powers from within Anatolia. Currently under protection, the monument offers visitors the opportunity to follow the traces of the Hittites in Western Anatolia and to understand the millennia-old complexity of Anatolian civilizations. The area where the monument is located is also an exploration route within the natural beauties of Mount Nif.
