Story

The historical building of Karataş High School (officially known as Karataş Anatolian High School) is one of the most important monuments of İzmir's Levantine and foreign educational heritage. The structure was founded in 1903 by the French Catholic community as 'St. Joseph Frères School'. 'Frères' (Brothers) are teachers working under a Catholic order. This school was established to provide European standard education, especially for the children of wealthy Levantine, Christian, and Jewish families in İzmir. The building is one of the most magnificent architectural examples of its era; it stands out with its cut-stone facade, high ceilings, wide corridors, and magnificent sea view. Its architectural style carries Neoclassical and Art Nouveau influences. The school served as a prestigious institution providing French education for many years, and in the 1950s, it was transferred to the Turkish Ministry of National Education and renamed 'Karataş High School'. This historic building is a concrete proof of İzmir's connection with the West and its multicultural educational heritage in its social and cultural history. Karataş High School is located very close to Dario Moreno Street and the Historical Elevator. These three structures are key points where the rich historical texture of the Konak-Karataş region, consisting of Levantine, Jewish, and Western heritage, converge. The high school building is an invaluable architectural and educational heritage, showing that İzmir is not only a city of trade and ports but also an international center of education and culture.
