Story

Kemeraltı Bazaar is considered the historical and cultural heart of İzmir, spreading over a large area from Konak Square to Agora. The history of the bazaar dates back to the mid-17th century, when the port of İzmir began to revive. Initially established in a narrow area near the port, the bazaar expanded over time to reach its current complex structure. It is believed to have taken its name from an arch-shaped structure or waterway that existed at the beginning but whose remnants are barely visible today. During the Ottoman period, Kemeraltı was not only a commercial center but also a reflection of the city's multicultural structure; Turks, Levantines, Greeks, Armenians, and Jews traded here together. The bazaar is a labyrinth consisting of inns (Kızlarağası Hanı, Abacıoğlu Hanı), mosques (Hisar Mosque, Başdurak Mosque), synagogues, and small artisan shops. Particularly Kızlarağası Hanı, dating from the 18th century, has been restored and transformed into a tourist center where souvenir and handicraft shops are located today. Kemeraltı is also a place where you can find the most traditional flavors of İzmir cuisine; the artisan restaurants and famous culinary stops (şambali, söğüş, lokma) here keep the local culture alive. The historical texture of Kemeraltı, which was relatively less affected by the Great İzmir Fire, is a living heritage area that carries İzmir's past commercial glory and its multi-religious/multi-linguistic structure to the present day. Even today, it is the most important witness to İzmir's continuous economic and social life, where artisans preserving old crafts merge with modern trade.
