Kemeraltı Synagogue Street
Description
The street and the surrounding synagogue area, located in the heart of Kemeraltı Bazaar, which was the living and worship center of İzmir's historical Jewish community.
Story
Havra Street is one of the most tangible indicators of İzmir's multicultural history and especially its Jewish community heritage. Located in the Konak district, right within the Kemeraltı Bazaar, this street has been the heart of the Jewish community's commercial and religious life in İzmir for centuries. With the Sephardic Jews who fled from Spain in 1492 seeking refuge in the Ottoman Empire, the Jewish population in İzmir increased, and this area became a center where synagogues, schools, and businesses concentrated. Havra Street gets its name from the numerous synagogues (havra) located very close to each other in its vicinity. These synagogues (e.g., Portuguese Synagogue, Bet Hillel, Algazi Synagogue) are generally religious structures hidden in narrow streets, with a plain exterior but magnificent interiors. This dense synagogue presence made İzmir one of the most important Jewish centers in the Mediterranean after Jerusalem and Thessaloniki for a period. The street also functions as a vibrant marketplace where fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and delicatessen products are sold. Havra Street reflects the religious tolerance and cultural diversity in İzmir's commercial center. Throughout history, this area, where Jewish, Turkish, Greek, and Armenian tradesmen traded side by side, is one of the finest examples of İzmir's cosmopolitan structure. Today, the restored synagogues and the vibrancy of the street symbolize efforts to preserve this rich heritage of the past. Walking along the street means experiencing İzmir's centuries-old polyphonic atmosphere.
