Klazomenai Ancient City Olive Oil Workshop
Description
One of the world's oldest known organized olive oil production facilities, located in the ancient city of Klazomenai.
Story
The Ancient City of Klazomenai is one of the 12 Ionian cities located on the coast, very close to the Urla İskele region. The city played an important role in Aegean trade, especially in the 6th century BC. The most significant finding that brought Klazomenai worldwide recognition is the **Olive Oil Workshop**, unearthed during excavations, which is one of the world's oldest known organized olive oil production facilities. The history of this facility dates back to the 6th century BC, proving how deeply rooted olive oil has been not only in Mediterranean diet but also in its economy. In the workshop, stone presses used to crush olives into a paste, a heavy lever-press system used to separate oil from the paste, and pits where the oil was stored are clearly visible. The facility shows that Klazomenai was not only a trade center but also one of the pioneers of olive oil production technology in the Aegean. In ancient times, olive oil was vital not only as food but also for fuel, cosmetics, and religious rituals, and this workshop provides tangible evidence of how this versatile production was carried out. Klazomenai represents the historical richness of Urla and is one of the most important archaeological sites reinforcing İzmir's identity as an 'olive oil geography'. Furthermore, Klazomenai's location on an islet (near Karantina Island), accessible by a short bridge from the mainland, also indicates the city's unique geographical position. This olive oil workshop is one of the most striking and specific traces of İzmir's agricultural and industrial past, spanning from antiquity to the modern era.
