Kordon and Cumhuriyet Square
Description
The famous coastline and square extending along Izmir Bay, symbolizing the city's social life and its connection to the sea.
Story
Kordon is Izmir's most vibrant and iconic coastline, stretching along Izmir Bay from Konak to Alsancak. The history of Kordon dates back to the mid-19th century, when Izmir was experiencing its golden age as an international trading port. This area, created by reclaiming land from the bay at that time, was initially designed as an elegant boulevard lined with European-style buildings, commercial offices, and the mansions of wealthy Levantine families. The Great Izmir Fire (1922) destroyed a large part of the Kordon, but it was rebuilt after the declaration of the Republic. The reconstruction process after the fire ensured Kordon took on its present wide and spacious appearance. **Cumhuriyet Square (Republic Square)**, located near the Alsancak part of Kordon, is famous for its equestrian monument of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This square is an important national memory point symbolizing the liberation of Izmir and the establishment of the Turkish Republic. The Atatürk Monument was created in 1933 by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica and symbolizes the command 'Armies! Your first target is the Mediterranean, forward!' given during the War of Independence. Today, Kordon is the most frequented social area for Izmir residents, with its grassy lawns, bicycle paths, and walking trails surrounded by palm trees. Especially at sunset, sitting on the grass facing the sea and watching the sun go down is an indispensable part of Kordon culture. Kordon and Cumhuriyet Square are important centers, both historically and culturally, that best reflect Izmir's Mediterranean, contemporary, and sea-integrated identity.
