Description

Seferihisar's historic castle, Kaleiçi neighborhood, and the nearby Ionian city of Teos, declared Turkey's first 'Cittaslow' (Slow City).

Story

Sığacık is a charming neighborhood located on the Aegean Sea coast, part of Seferihisar district of İzmir, and is famous for being Turkey's first 'Cittaslow' (Slow City), registered in 2009. The history of the region dates back to **Teos Ancient City**, one of the Ionian city-states from the 1000s BC. Teos is located very close to Sığacık and was one of the most important art and cultural centers of the region in ancient times. Teos is particularly famous for hosting the Temple of Dionysus (Temple Architecture: Hermogenes) and the world's first known Artists' Guild; this guild brought together actors, musicians, and poets. Today's **Kaleiçi** of Sığacık was established within the walls of a castle built during the Ottoman period, intended to be used as a naval base during Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's Rhodes campaign. The castle played a critical role in the 16th-century struggle against the Genoese. The Kaleiçi neighborhood is famous for its narrow stone streets and colorful, traditionally Aegean-style houses. A large part of these houses has been restored and converted into boutique hotels, cafes, and art workshops. The local producers' market established in the heart of Kaleiçi, in line with the region's 'Slow City' philosophy, allows for the sale of local products and handicrafts. Sığacık and Teos offer a unique route that presents both İzmir's ancient port history and its modern, environmentally conscious philosophy of life.
