Story

Saint Polycarp Church, located in the Konak district near Alsancak, is one of the oldest and most important religious structures in Izmir. The church is named after Saint Polycarp (AD 69–155), who is regarded as the first bishop and patron saint of Izmir in the early periods of Christian history. Polycarp worked for the spread of Christianity during the Roman Empire and was martyred in Izmir. The church is a vital symbol for the city, carrying the legacy of being one of the seven churches of Izmir. The initial construction of the church took place during the Ottoman Empire in 1625, with the permission of Sultan Murad IV, at the request of French King Louis XIII. This situation is important as it demonstrates Izmir's multicultural and multi-religious environment of tolerance. The church has been damaged by major Izmir fires and earthquakes but has been rebuilt and restored each time. The architecture of the structure bears Baroque and Neoclassical influences. The church's most valuable artworks are the frescoes depicting the life of Saint Polycarp, created in the 19th century by the French artist Raymond Pere; these frescoes adorn the ceiling and apse of the church. Saint Polycarp Church has maintained its central role in the religious and social life of Izmir's Levantine and Western trade communities for centuries. Still actively used today, the church is an important example of the preservation of different faiths and cultural heritage in Izmir.
