Şirince Village
Description
A historic and charming village built on slopes, preserving the characteristics of typical Aegean and Greek architecture, near Selçuk.
Story
Şirince Village, located in the Selçuk district of İzmir, is one of the settlements built on a lush green slope that best preserves traditional Aegean and Greek architecture. The history of the village dates back to the efforts of people who abandoned the ancient city of Ephesus after its port filled with alluvium and moved away from the sea, settling in mountainous regions. The village's original establishment dates to the Byzantine period. During the Ottoman period, it developed primarily as a village inhabited by the Greek Orthodox community. It is rumored that its original name was 'Çirkince' (Ugly), but over time it transformed into 'Şirince' (Lovely) due to its beauty. The village hosted a predominantly Greek population until the 1923 Turkey-Greece Population Exchange. After the exchange, Turkish immigrants from Thessaloniki settled here. The most striking feature of Şirince is its traditional **Greek houses**, built with stone and adobe, compatible with the slopes and featuring bay windows. The architecture of the houses integrates with the narrow, stone-paved streets. The village contains restored old churches, traditional wine cellars, and small shops selling local products. Şirince is particularly famous for its local winemaking tradition; fruit wines are widely produced here. In 2012, the village gained significant international media attention and increased in popularity due to rumors that the apocalypse, according to the Mayan calendar, would not occur there. Preserving its historical texture, artistic atmosphere, and local flavors, Şirince is an attractive destination for those looking to get away from the center of İzmir and experience the rural heritage of the Aegean.
