📍 İzmir, Kemalpaşa📅 From 7000 BCE
Archaeological Site

Description

The second oldest settlement in İzmir after Yeşilova, bearing traces of settlements from the Neolithic (New Stone Age) and Chalcolithic (Copper Stone Age) periods.

Story

Ulucak Mound is located near Kemalpaşa district, as one of the oldest settlements in İzmir after Bornova. Immediately after Yeşilova Mound, it is one of the most important archaeological sites illuminating İzmir's **prehistoric period** (Neolithic and Chalcolithic). Excavations at the mound have revealed traces of continuous settlement dating back to 7000 BCE. The findings at Ulucak have shown the architectural structures, daily tools, ceramic kilns, and burial traditions of the period. This mound has provided critical information to the scientific world on how Neolithic life was shaped in the inner regions of the Aegean, how agriculture was practiced, and how the transition to settled life took place. In contrast to Yeşilova's urban Neolithic beginning, Ulucak represents prehistoric life in İzmir's rural and agricultural hinterland. This site is a key and detailed stop in terms of prehistoric archaeology, proving İzmir's 8500 years of continuous settlement history. Unlike ancient cities, it reveals life at ground zero, where civilization was just beginning to flourish.
