Description

A historical island connected to Urla Pier by a bridge, where quarantine (inspection) procedures were carried out for ships on Mediterranean and Aegean trade routes in the past.

Story

Urla Quarantine Island, located directly opposite Urla Pier and connected to the mainland by a short bridge, is one of the most interesting and specific points in the medical and commercial history of the Aegean Sea. The island gets its name from the fact that in the 19th century, ships arriving at the port and their passengers were **quarantined (inspected)** here to prevent the spread of epidemic diseases such as cholera, plague, and typhus in the Mediterranean and Aegean. The quarantine facilities on the island were built by the French in 1865. The structures on the island included hospital buildings, disinfection rooms, doctors' houses, customs buildings, and guesthouses where passengers awaiting the quarantine process stayed. Quarantine procedures were part of the Ottoman Empire's efforts to modernize and comply with international health standards. This facility demonstrates the critical role İzmir played as an international trade port and how important a defense line it established against epidemics. Quarantine Island was also part of the settlement area of the ancient city of Klazomenai (an olive oil workshop is also in this region). Although the historical structures on the island have been restored and lost their quarantine function, the region still preserves its historical importance today. The island represents a unique architectural and cultural heritage at the intersection of İzmir's trade and health history. It is a complementary point that should be visited along with the Quarantine Viaduct to understand İzmir's commercial and Levantine past.
