Story

Old Foça, located north of İzmir Bay, is a historic port city founded as Phokaia, one of the Ionian city-states, in the 7th century BC. The history of Foça extends to the brave seafarers of Phokaia, who were famous for establishing distant colonies such as Marseille (France) and Elea (Italy) in the Mediterranean. The remains of the ancient city are located directly beneath and around the modern Foça settlement. In particular, Foça's famous Walls were formed by the repair and strengthening of the structure built by the Phokaian people in ancient times to defend themselves against the Persian invasion, during the Genoese and Ottoman periods. A large part of the walls remains within the settlement fabric surrounding today's harbor. Five Gates Castle, located right at the mouth of the harbor, is the most concrete evidence of Foça's defense mechanism against threats from the sea. The castle was built by the Genoese and later significantly strengthened during the Ottoman Empire (especially during the time of Fatih Sultan Mehmet). Its name comes from the five arched gates on the sea side that controlled entry and exit to the harbor. The castle served not only as a defensive structure but also as an important customs and naval base during the Ottoman period. These walls and castle of Foça demonstrate the city's uninterrupted importance in maritime trade and strategic location from ancient times onwards. Old Foça has preserved its historical texture, with stone houses, narrow streets, and a small harbor creating a peaceful atmosphere. It is also a special environmental protection area where endangered marine species such as the Mediterranean Monk Seal live. The walls and castle of Old Foça represent a multi-layered heritage site reflecting the deep history of İzmir's northern coasts, the spread of ancient civilizations into the Mediterranean, and the Ottoman struggle for sea control.
