Story

Meryemçil (Geben) Castle is a significant medieval fortress located near Geben in the Andırın district of Kahramanmaraş. Built on a dominant hilltop overlooking the surrounding valleys and routes between Andırın and Göksun, the castle served as a strategic military outpost controlling movement across the region. Although largely surviving in the form of ruins, the remains of curtain walls, tower bases, and masonry details clearly reflect the characteristic features of medieval military architecture. Historians note that the site likely functioned as a border and observation fortress during the Byzantine and Crusader periods, and later continued to be used during the Turkoman principalities and the era of the Dulkadir Beylik. The natural rocky terrain and steep slopes strengthened the defensive capacity of the fortress, creating a naturally fortified environment. Today, Meryemçil (Geben) Castle attracts visitors not only with its historical significance but also with its dramatic landscape and panoramic views across the valleys. Walking among the ruins allows visitors to experience the region’s historical geography and to observe traces of medieval defensive strategy in situ. Known and preserved within local memory, the castle stands as an important cultural and historical landmark representing the heritage of Andırın.
