Story

Allahuekber Mountains National Park is a region where the harsh climate of Eastern Anatolia meets silent forests, impressive in both natural and historical terms. Spreading across the borders of Sarıkamış in Kars and the Şenkaya and Horasan districts of Erzurum, the park lies on the mountain range that gives it its name, at an average altitude of over 2,000 meters, and especially in winter it turns into a true stage of endurance. Today these mountains serve as an area for hiking and nature observation, but during the First World War they were also the site of one of the most dramatic fronts of the Sarıkamış Operation. On these slopes, where snow in winter can exceed one meter and blizzards can rage for days, thousands of Ottoman soldiers froze to death, and the name Allahuekber became a symbol that evokes both the majesty of the landscape and the tragedy that unfolded here. Within the national park, monuments, cemeteries and information boards commemorate this painful memory and turn a nature walk into a journey of remembrance. While walking along the paths among spruce and Scots pine forests, visitors listen to birdsong and at the same time encounter the past through memorial stones emerging from the mist. Allahuekber Mountains National Park stands out among Turkey’s protected areas not only for its history but also for its biological diversity. The high altitude and cold climate allow endemic plant species and mammals such as wild goats, wolves, bears and lynx to survive here. In spring and summer, when the snow melts, alpine meadows bloom with mountain flowers, coloring the park and offering unique compositions for nature photographers. Although day trips are possible, the very early morning and sunset hours, when the mist rises from the valleys and dances with the mountains, are among the most memorable moments the park can offer. Declared a national park in the era of Modern Turkey, Allahuekber Mountains is managed with the dual aim of preserving the painful legacy of war and safeguarding the fragile mountain ecosystems for future generations.
