Kars Castle, perched on a steep hill dominating the city, is one of the most impressive fortifications in Eastern Anatolia. As you walk up to the castle today, you first pass through narrow streets lined with old stone houses, then follow a gently rising path where both the wind grows stronger and history seems to fall in step with your footsteps. Approaching the gate, the thick walls and arrow slits immediately remind you that this was a vital defensive line for centuries. Although the foundations of the castle date back to the Middle Ages, most of what you see today is based on construction in the 12th century during the Saltukid period and later repairs carried out under the Ottomans. During the Ottoman–Russian wars, the castle witnessed sieges and changed hands several times. For this reason, you can read traces of different eras side by side in the walls and towers: in some places neatly cut stonework, in others rougher masonry and repair sections added later stand out clearly. Once inside, you are greeted by a broad inner courtyard and the foundations of ruined structures. This space, which once housed military depots, barracks, and administrative units, is now best known for its viewing terraces. Walking up to various points along the walls, you can take in at a glance the wide Kars Plain below, the Kars River splitting the city in two, and the stone bridge facing the castle. In winter, when everything is covered with snow, the contrast between the black basalt walls and the white landscape makes the scene even more striking. Kars Castle is not only a military structure; it is also the city’s memory. Through the periods of Ottoman rule, Russian occupation, the early Republic, and modern Turkey, soldiers on guard, caravans entering the city, and troops heading for the border would all pass through this gate. As a visitor walking on the same stones today, you become a small part of this long story. Nowadays, the castle is a popular gathering spot for travelers and photography enthusiasts, especially at sunset. The wind can be harsh, but as you stand at the top looking out over Kars’s stone houses, the distant mountain silhouettes, and the city lights, you can feel both the melancholy and pride that come with living on a frontier.
